Aquaman 2 Petition to Replace Amber Heard Gains New Traction Amid Libel Trial

Posted 2022/04/25 12 0

The Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard legal battle has reignited the popular petition to have the latter removed from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. As of now, Depp and Heard have been settling their differences in the courtroom after each movie star accused the other of domestic violence and physical abuse when they were married. Depp is suing Heard for $50 for defamation, with Heard countersuing for $100 million, arguing that he’s the one defaming her by claiming she abused him.

However, long before this trial, the troubles between Depp and Heard were public knowledge. Audio recordings, which have also been played in court recently, were previously made public on the internet for anyone to listen to. These recordings reveal Heard allegedly admitting to starting “a physical fight” with Depp and “hitting” him on another occasion. This helped spawn a “Justice for Johnny Depp” social media campaign, as fans felt it was unfair that Depp had reportedly lost his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean series over Heard’s claims.

Making matters worse for Depp, he lost a separate libel trial against a UK tabloid for labeling him a “wife-beater” in a published article. Shortly thereafter, Depp revealed that he was asked by Warner Bros. to resign from his role in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore even though filming had already started. As the same studio hadn’t gotten involved with Heard’s attachment to Aquaman 2, this further fueled the strength of a petition demanding Heard be similarly be fired, claiming that the evidence supports Depp.

The new trial has brought even more attention to the situation, and now, the petition is picking up steam once again. As of this writing, it has garnered more than 1,931,000 signatures, and that number continues to rise, with several new names added every minute. The petition description reads:

“Amber Heard has been exposed as a domestic abuser by Johnny Depp… As Amber Heard is a known and proven domestic abuser, Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment should and must remove Heard from their Aquaman 2 film project. They must not ignore the suffering of Heard’s victims, and must not glamorize a domestic abuser. Men are victims of domestic abuse, just like women. This must be recognized, and action must be taken to prevent a known abuser from being celebrated within the entertainment industry.”

Amber Heard’s Involvement Might Affect Aquaman 2 Ticket Sales, But By How Much?

With nearly two million people signing a petition to have one of its main stars removed from the film, it would seem that many would-be filmgoers will be skipping Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom when the sequel is released. It just remains to be seen how much of an effect this will have on the sequel’s release following the immense success of the original. As it puts more distance from the trial and the movie’s release, it may have helped Warner Bros. to delay Aquaman 2 to 2023.

The new Warner Bros. movie Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore similarly had fans boycotting the film for recasting Johnny Depp’s role, and while that film did fall short of studio expectations, it’s hard to say how much of that can be attributed to the Depp getting fired. Other fans had already been calling for a boycott due to controversial comments J.K. Rowling has made about the transgender community. Lukewarm reviews given to the film upon its premiere may have also contributed to the sharp drop in ticket sales in its second weekend in theaters.

In any case, it would appear that there are almost two million Depp fans, at the very least, who will be avoiding the film. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released on March 17, 2023.
