Black Panther 2 Leak Reveals First Look at Namor the Sub-Mariner

The latest Marvel leak has potentially revealed our first, albeit somewhat blurry, look at the introduction of the beloved character Namor. A character expected to make his long-awaited debut in the upcoming MCU sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Revealed courtesy of The Direct (and subsequently shared on social media), the image offers a glimpse at what the character will look like in live-action.

While the blur keeps the details at bay, it’s clear that the Namor of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will take major inspiration from the pages of Marvel Comics and the classic 1960s look. Wearing green short-shorts alongside an assortment of gold accessories, the image teases a surprisingly accurate depiction of Namor’s more traditional costume, with blurry shapes attached to his feet, even suggesting that his ankle wings will remain intact.

A talented fan has even taken the image and created a clearer look at what Namor might look like when the Black Panther sequel hits theaters later this year.

The origin of Namor will be familiar to comic book fans, with the character being born after his human father falls in love with an Atlantean Princess. Namor, also known as the Sub-Mariner, is often depicted as an anti-hero, switching allegiances depending on what is best for his underwater kingdom. He possesses the powers of super-strength, speed and stamina, as well as being able to survive underwater, and even has the power of flight thanks to vestigial “wings” on both of his ankles. While still unconfirmed, it is strongly suspected that Narcos: Mexico and The Forever Purge star Tenoch Huerta has been cast as Namor for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Looking at the leaked concept art, Namor’s golden armor appears to be Mayan or Aztec in design, adding further fuel to the rumors that the character will undergo some origin changes when making the leap from the pages of Marvel Comics to the big screen.

Namor Was Almost in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness’ The Illuminati

Namor is a major Marvel player in the comics, and has always traditionally been a member of the superhero think-tank The Illuminati, who recently made their debut in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. According to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron, this was going to be the case in the recent Marvel outing. But Marvel Studios had other plans.

“[We] talked about him, because he’s certainly an original member of the Illuminati,” Waldron said. “But I think Marvel has other plans for him in the MCU. And so, he didn’t make his way in this particular movie.” Considering the fate of The Illuminati, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Dominique Thorne. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, it is expected that the sequel will find Wakanda at war with Atlantis.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 11, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
