Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers hit Disney+ with a surprisingly refreshing reboot this weekend, so could we see another outing in the future?

The original announcement that Chip’ n Dale: Rescue Rangers was making a comeback as a Disney+ movie sent an equal wave of delight and dread through fans of the late 80s animated series. Reboots, remakes and indeed “comebacks” of any old cartoon shows tend to lead to a fair amount of criticism from those with fond memories of their childhood favorites, while the studios attempt to make them relevant to today’s younger audiences. However, when the new movie arrived this weekend, it was clear that this was not that kind of reboot, and indeed has already got talk of a sequel circulating.

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers works as both a reboot, a meta critique of reboots and an extended version of the show itself, all the while being set in a “real world” where Chip and Dale are two actors who simply played their roles in the Rescue Rangers series. Throw in so many cameos and references, many of them from outside of Disney’s own characters, that you would be hard-pressed to catch them all even after multiple viewings, and you have a movie that is very rightly being called a successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? So when it comes to a sequel, how likely is that to work? Speaking to ComicBook.com, Doug Mand said:

“In terms of the world, yes. I would say that, and not just a shameless writer, cash grab or whatever, we think that there is a lot more to tell in the world that we’ve started to play in this movie. And that we’ve kind of only scratched the surface in both characters that we want to explore and stories for the characters that are currently in the movie. There’s more to be said if the public likes the movie and Disney has an appetite for it. We do have ideas. And we do think that there’s ways to keep digging at some of these themes, through different avenues.”

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers Proves That Reboots Can Work

While there are a lot of differences between the original Rescue Rangers series and the new movie, there are plenty of things that remain the same. Chip’s design is mostly unchanged, with just a little sprucing up of the animation, while Dale has had “the CGI surgery,” but even that is worked into the story, along with the non-squeaky voices of the two leads, well enough that doesn’t matter. By not taking itself seriously, the movie somehow manages to be a perfect Rescue Rangers story, without being a Rescue Rangers story.

Co-writer Dan Gregor commented on this in the same interview, saying:

“So that is the genesis of the project and the concept is that, okay, we started really having this conversation with ourselves about, ‘Why do we keep making all these movies and why do we keep rehashing all this old stuff?’ And so once we realized like, well, let’s just put those questions and concerns into the mouths of the characters. It really sort of opened up the whole concept of the movie, which is to take them as washed up old actors and living within a Hollywood that will only give them vindication and validation if they participate in that culture.”

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is streaming now on Disney+, along with the entire original animated series.
