The new Super Mario Bros. movie from Universal and Illumination has been pushed back from its Christmas 2022 release to Easter 2023. While the movie seems to be pretty much done by all accounts, Deadline reported the studio has decided to shift the film to make a bid to grab some of the spring holiday box office as it goes up against Sony’s George Forman biopic and an untitled Warner Bros. movie. The news means that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will also be pushed back from its original September release to fill the Dec. 21 slot left behind by the Mario Bros movie.

Super Mario Bros. is one of the biggest video game franchises globally, and the new animated movie has pulled together an impressive voice cast to bring the Italian plumbers back to the big screen. The cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

While it was only a couple of months ago that it seemed that the film was already complete and only the voice-over work was to be completed, it looks like the delayed release is for nothing more than making sure the film ends up being released at a time when it can capitalize on a family audience around the Easter holidays.

Super Mario Bros. Suffered Some Backlash Over Its Casting

When the announcement was made that Chris Pratt would be taking on the role of Mario in Super Mario Bros. there were several social media users who were pretty unhappy about the casting, expressing concerns that Pratt would be adopting a stereotypical, over-the-top Italian accent to play the role. At the time, Pratt had shared a jokey post with the caption of “It’s-a meeeee!!!,” which did not really help matters but producer Chris Meledandri defended the casting choice, insisting that fans would be blown away by Pratt’s vocal performance. He said at the time:

“All I can tell you is the voice that he’s doing for us, and Mario, is phenomenal. Yeah I can’t wait for people to hear it. As an Italian American myself, I understand. You know, I understand the comments. Charlie Day, who’s playing Luigi, actually comes from Italian heritage. Yeah, so that’s our nod.”

Pratt himself spoke at the time of the casting about the role being a dream come true for him, as he has a lot memories of playing a co-op version of the Nintendo game in a laundromat near his home. He added, “”As it is right now, it’s-a me, Mario. That’s not the voice. You’ll have to wait the hear the voice, but we’ve been working hard at it, and I’m really excited to announce that I am going to be the voice of that video game that I dreamed about playing as a kid. Dreams come true.”

Super Mario Bros. will now arrive in cinemas on Apr. 7, 2023.
