Set images have revealed the return of David Tennant, Catherine Tate and another familiar face to the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special.

After news broke that David Tennant will be returning to his role as the 10th iteration of The Doctor in Doctor Who, we can now see the actor back on set filming for his return to the long-running British sci-fi series. While Ncuti Gatwa is taking over the role from Jodie Whittaker, who will depart after one final episode to be broadcast later this year, Tennant will be returning for the 60h anniversary of the show next year. As one of the most popular actors to ever play the part, Tennant previously took part in the 50th anniversary special, in which he starred alongside Matt Smith’s Doctor, and John Hurt playing a previously hidden version of the character, The War Doctor. Tennant’s return for the 60th anniversary is one that fans have welcomed.

There is currently no information known about the 60th anniversary episode regarding the plot, but so far, the episode will feature Tennant and Gatwa along with Catherine Tate, who will reprise her role as Donna, and Bernard Cribbins, who will be back as Wilf Mott. Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies has dropped some very vague and inconclusive hints, and that is not likely to change anytime soon as the production team will want to keep as much of the special a secret and surprise for fans.

The new images and video have shown David Tennant on set, dressed in a similar but not identical costume to one of those worn by his character when he last appeared in the show. Another image also revealed Tate’s Donna, but that image is not as clear. In addition to this, photos of a TARDIS, which could be the one that has been most recently redesigned for Jodie Whittaker’s tenure, and some kind of Cybermen museum or exhibition have been shared, along with a couple of pictures confirming that Bernard Cribbins will be involved in the role of Wilfred Mott. Check out some of the images below.

Ncuti Gatwa is the 14th Doctor in Doctor Who

While David Tennant’s return will undoubtedly be a boost for the recently beleaguered show, the real test will be how Ncuti Gatwa manages to capture the imagination of a fan base that has been mostly disappointed by recent storylines in the series. News of the Sex Education actor’s casting in the role was met with a mostly positive reaction from fans, who noted that the star has a similar kind of energy about him that made Tennant such a popular choice as The Doctor.

Adding Russell T. Davies into the mix, the future of Doctor Who looks brighter than it has for a few years. After viewers became disillusioned with storylines that spent too much time on long heart-to-heart scenes and social commentary monologues, bringing back the man who revived the show in 2005 to such critical acclaim could be a genius stroke that may well be the series’ savior.
