Davis Ayer Reacts to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Wrap Tweet

The world of superhero movies is almost as intricately linked off-screen as it is on, and as James Gunn celebrated wrapping on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, his Suicide Squad predecessor, David Ayer, reacted to the news with a supportive message on Twitter. There has been a lot of coverage about David Ayer’s version of Suicide Squad, which arrived in 2016 to a lukewarm response from fans and critics, mainly around calls for an extended cut of his movie to be released. In comparison, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad sequel, which partially rebooted the series, has so far had one spin-off series and others on the way.

While the two directors clearly have different ways of dealing with a movie franchise, there is a clear respect between the pair, as Ayer responded to Gunn’s Guardians wrap post by saying, “Congratulations, can’t wait to see it.” Gunn subsequently responded to that post with a simple heart emoji, proving that the respect is mutual.

Fans have recently been upping their calls for Warner Bros. to “release the Ayer cut” of Suicide Squad, one of those fabled cuts said to exist that will change the way people view the movie. While this kind of social media bombardment went a long way to getting Zack Snyder’s Justice League released, that was a completely different kettle of fish, and in reality will probably not work again for the Suicide Squad.

James Gunn Is A Big Part Of Both Marvel and DC Successes on the Big and Small Screens

After being fired by Disney over some historical tweets, it looked like James Gunn’s personal Marvel adventure was over, and he was quickly snapped up to helm a new version of The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. However, a U-turn by Disney put Gunn in the very privileged place of being part of two of the biggest movie-making machines in history, and it was a chance he has certainly made the most of.

While it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, which will be preceded by the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special this December, will be Gunn’s last cosmic Marvel outing, his work with Warner Bros. just seems to be getting started. After The Suicide Squad was a big pandemic hit, his Peacemaker spin-off series starring John Cena will be getting a second seasons, and Gunn is also involved in a new show featuring the character of Amanda Waller, played in the Suicide Squad franchise by Viola Davis. There are also rumors of more spin-offs in the pipeline, and Gunn himself has previously confessed to having his own wish list of projects. Earlier this year he said:

“There’s all sorts of other characters I’m interested in doing. Joker isn’t really one of them. He’s been done well so many times by so many people. I am much more interested in taking characters who haven’t fully had their shot, or people who I feel [connected to]. For whatever reason, I feel connected to Harley Quinn. I feel she’s one of the easiest characters I’ve ever written. So I’m interested in her, and I’m interested in some other DC characters, and we’ll just see what happens next.”
