Doctor Strange 2 Writer Admits to Almost Getting Stumped by His Own Storyline

Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron needed a moment of inspiration to get all the characters where they needed to be for the movie’s finale.

When dealing with storylines that involve a multiverse, it can be almost as tricky to keep everything in check as it is when working with time travel. That is something writer Michael Waldron discovered when working on the script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as he almost became trapped by his own storyline. Having already dabbled in multiple realities with Loki, you would expect that Waldron would be best placed to delve further into the Marvel multiverse, but it seems the final act of the movie had him “stuck for a while.” Expect spoilers for Multiverse of Madness in this article.

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness delivers a mind-bending trip into the multiverse, which sees Doctor Strange being pitted against Wanda Maximoff and the evil powers of the Darkhold, and culminates in a battle between Wanda, a zombie version of Strange, Wong, and newcomer America Chavez on Mount Wundagore. However, to get to that point, Michael Waldron had to have a moment of inspiration to be able to get everyone in the same universe again for that final fight. Speaking with Screen Rant, Waldron explained:

“Just trying to figure out how we would get Strange into the third act to fight Wanda on Mount Wundagore was pretty tough. Ultimately, the solution was he would possess his own corpse. When we came up with that, it was a real eureka moment. But that was like, geez, multiversal travel is so hard. It has to be hard – it has to be an impossible thing to do, such that only America can do it. That meant when Stephen got stranded in a multiverse, in another universe without America, he really was stuck for a while. And so was I.”

Multiverse of Madness is Already Another Huge Marvel Hit Despite Its Horror Elements

After less than a week on release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has already taken over half a billion dollars worldwide. While some critics were less than full of praise for the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of the year, that has not stopped the film from pulling in audiences worldwide as it heads to the top of the worldwide box office takings table for 2022.

The movie has raised some questions about its PG-13 rating; with many of the darker elements of the story being seen as too frightening for smaller children, a lot of fans have bought into the new, darker tone of the MCU entry. With Sam Raimi at the helm, the film was always going to please many fans of the director’s previous work, and with the additional promise of multiple big cameo appearances, stunning visuals and a first huge leap into the multiverse, it is hard for Marvel fans not to find themselves dragged along for the scary, thrill ride.

Where the story goes next for Doctor Strange, who by the end of the movie has clearly altered by his use of the Darkhold, and for Wanda, who is assumed to have died destroying Mount Wundagore but is more likely to have saved herself for a future return, is something that is currently in the murky mists of the MCU’s distant plans.
