Doctor Strange 2 Writer Shares Update on Upcoming Kevin Feige Star Wars Film

The future of Star Wars on the silver screen is uncertain, but development is actively continuing on the next film from the galaxy far, far away

Now that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is out in theaters, the film’s lead writer is hard at work on his next project, which will be set in a galaxy far, far away. Michael Waldron has built quite a successful career over the last few years, working as a writer and producer on such projects as Rick and Morty, Loki, Heels, and Multiverse of Madness. Due to his experience with Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige selected Waldron to pen the script for a mysterious Star Wars film that the MCU mastermind is producing. In a recent interview with Variety, Waldron provided an update on the film’s development, and how it compares to working on Multiverse of Madness:

“We’re finally into it in earnest. I mean, I’m writing away, It’s a lot of fun. I’m enjoying having the freedom on that to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or anything. It maybe has a little bit less of a – it just doesn’t have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you’re servicing on top of it, the way I did with Doctor Strange. So it’s nice. It feels like a different exercise.”

Rumors about Feige developing a Star Wars project began circulating in 2019, and both he and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy have since confirmed that the two are partnering on a film. Considering Waldron’s comments, it sounds like even though the story will be set in the world of Star Wars, it won’t have any connective tissue to any other film or series in the franchise. The majority of the Star Wars films have been beholden to the Skywalker Saga, but getting out of that time period provides a chance to explore the galaxy in ways that haven’t been seen yet.

Star Wars Films Have Been in Limbo Since 2019

Lucasfilm has been focusing on building out its Star Wars properties on Disney+ over the last few years, which has put its future film slate in limbo. The last Star Wars movie to be released was The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019, serving as the ultimate culmination to the more than 40-year-old story of the Skywalkers. As of now, the only Star Wars film that seems poised to come out within the next five years is Rogue Squadron from Patty Jenkins.

The film was announced during the Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation, and despite some production delays since then, Disney is still planning to release Rogue Squadron in December 2023. Jenkins is also hard at work developing a third Wonder Woman film, so there’s a chance Rogue Squadron could move into 2024 if the director’s schedule gets too full.

A Star Wars film from Taika Waititi was also announced to be in development on Investor Day 2020, but updates have been few and far between since then. Before Waldron’s update, not much had been heard about the Kevin Feige project either, and even with Waldron saying he’s writing the script now, there’s no word on when that film could see the light of day. Shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have been keeping the Star Wars flame alive, but the franchise’s future on the silver screen remains unclear.
