“We always knew we wanted to introduce Clea, who in the comics is you could say the great love of Doctor Strange, but really in a lot of ways his formidable equal as a sorcerer herself. Her backstory is fascinating, she’s the niece of Dormammu, the giant floating head from the first movie.”

Of course, Clea would be far from just a love interest to Doctor Strange, with the character possessing an intriguing origin story of her own as well as a variety of magic-based superpowers. With the uber-talented Charlize Theron now all purple-suited up for the role, audiences can confidently expect Doctor Strange 3 to feature Strange and Clea even further exploring the multiverse.

“They have a lot of great adventures in the comics, and we knew we wanted to introduce her, but it felt like we had to close the book to some extent on his love story with Christine Palmer, Rachel McAdams’ character.”

As well as hinting at the further adventures of Doctor Strange, the inclusion of Clea was also intended to conclude the relationship between Stephen and Christine Palmer. A relationship that therefore wraps up with Strange telling her, “I love you in every universe.” A line that rivals “I love you 3000” for most heart-breaking MCU moment.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is Now the Third Highest-Grossing Movie of 2022

Directed by Sam Raimi and written by Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff AKA The Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer.

The Marvel hero must unite with The Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, in order to protect America Chavez, a teenager who can travel through the multiverse, from a rampaging Wanda Maximoff.
