Doctor Strange 2 Remains in Top Spot at Box Office as Downton Abbey 2 Debuts at No. 2

Downton Abbey: A New Era fell short of box office expectations as In the Multiverse of Madness kept its spot on the top of the mountain.

Marvel continues to enjoy financial success with the theatrical run of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The hit sequel has scored another $31.6 million at North American movie theaters to up its total domestic haul to $342 million. While the movie saw a sharp decline for its second weekend compared to opening weekend, the fans are still coming out to support the release with a less steep decline for its third weekend in theaters.

Focus Features probably didn’t expect Downton Abbey: A New Era to overtake Doctor Strange 2 at the box office, given the immense popularity of Marvel superhero movies. So it was perhaps not a shock for the film to land in the No. 2 spot without coming close to overtaking the Marvel sequel to land at No. 1. The Downton Abbey sequel also fell short of initial box office projections, as it was expected to pull in around $18 million domestically. It has come up with about $16 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Meanwhile, The Bad Guys is sticking around in the top three spots, landing at No. 3 with another $6.1 million earned. The animated feature has now earned $74.3 million domestically and is still going strong by remaining in the top three upon its fifth weekend in theaters. It had debuted at No. 1 and had kept that spot the following week.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Is Still Raking it In

With its seventh weekend in theaters, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 comes up at No. 4. The video game adaptation drew $3.9 million, upping the domestic total to $181 million. It is the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, and as these numbers continue to rise, the harder it will be for another video game movie to break that record. Paramount will certainly try to do it themselves with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which is in development.

We round out the top five with Men, the new horror film from A24. It debuts with a $3.2 million haul in the U.S. and Canada, putting it just above another A24 film, Everything Everywhere All at Once. The continued box office success for Everything Everywhere All at Once is pushing the film past the profits earned by Uncut Gems to become the highest-grossing release for A24, which must be great news for the company. Time will tell if Men can stick around at theaters for quite as long.
