Following the announcement that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will be the next iteration of iconic space-and-time-traveler Doctor Who, Russell T Davies has released a statement regarding the news, heaping praise on the actor and saying he “can’t wait to get started.” Released via the official Doctor Who website, Davies reveals that Gatwa impressed instantly and “owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.” You can read the rest of Davies’ statement below.

“The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

Doctor Who fans have known for some time that the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, would soon regenerate. While several high-profile names were put forward as potential replacements, including Michael Sheen, Hugh Grant, Michaela Coel, and Matt Berry, it has now been revealed that Ncuti Gatwa will be the next actor to wield the sonic screwdriver.

Davies has even since revealed that they had someone else in mind for the role of the Fourteenth Doctor, but Gatwa, who was the very last audition, blew them all away and won the day. “It was the most blazing audition,” Davies said. “It was our last audition. It was our very last one. We thought we had someone and then in he came and stole it.”

Ncuti Gatwa is Honored to Have Been Chosen to Continue the Legacy of Doctor Who

Ncuti Gata does not have many credits under his best, but the young actor has already impressed with his role in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education, which has earned him a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in Television and three BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Male Comedy Performance.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” Gatwa said in a statement following the news that he will be the next Doctor. “A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who later this year.
