Director Olivia Wilde debuted exclusive footage from her upcoming psychological thriller, Don’t Worry Darling, at the ongoing CinemaCon event. Starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, Don’t Worry Darling follows a housewife living in the 1950s who slowly uncovers dark secrets. During the panel, Wilde made some hugely intriguing, very favorable comparisons, which should give us some idea of what to expect from the movie…

“Inception, The Matrix, Truman Show. It’s my love letter to the movies that pushed boundaries of ambition. It’s ambitious, but I think we made something pretty special.”

After comparing Don’t Worry Darling to some of the most mind-twisting movies of the modern age, Olivia Wilde asked the audience to “Imagine a life where you could have anything you ever, not just the tangible things…But also the things that really matter: True love with the perfect partner, real trusted friendships. What would it take for you to give up that perfect life? What are you willing to sacrifice to do what’s right? Are you willing to dismantle the system that is designed to serve you?”

Don’t Worry Darling follows “a 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.” Reporter Jeff Sneider was in attendance at CinemaCon 2022, and offered some insight into what the footage involved.

Olivia Wilde Heaped Praise on Both Florence Pugh & Harry Styles

The footage from Don’t Worry Darling was reportedly met with an elated response from the crowd, with descriptions of what was shown hinting at the mysterious, mind-boggling nature of the movie. In the footage, Florence Pugh’s Alice and the rest of the women in the community are told to stay inside “where it’s safe.” Suspicious of the apparent utopia in which they inhabit, Alice slowly begins to unravel the dark truth as she witnesses what appear to be acts of violence and wonders “if this place is dangerous.”

“I need you to listen to me. They’re lying about everything,” Alice says in distress amid scenes of her wrapped in plastic and being chased by strange and sinister men in red jumpsuits. While keeping things close to the chest, it is clear that Don’t Worry Darling will deal with contemporary themes such as gas-lighting within the confines of a warped, high-concept thriller.

Led by Florence Pugh as Alice and Harry Styles as Jack, director Olivia Wilde heaped praise on the stars. The filmmaker described Pugh’s work as a performance that “you have to see to believe. You’re witnessing the birth of a full-fledged movie star.”

With regards to Harry Styles, who impressed in Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama Dunkirk and recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Eternals, Wilde described his performance in Don’t Worry Darling as a “nothing short of a revelation in this part.”

Don’t Worry Darling co-stars Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, and Nick Kroll, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 23, 2022 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
