Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Everything We Know

Posted 2022/04/23 22 0

Paramount Pictures is set to bring the world of Dungeons & Dragons back to the big screen for an all-new reboot film in 2023. The iconic tabletop RPG was previously adapted in a series of three films released between 2000 and 2012. Those original films never saw particular success, with the first theatrical release being both a critical and commercial failure. Despite that, two more films were released to little fanfare, with the 2005 sequel Wrath of the Dragon God premiering exclusively on the Sci-Fi Channel and the 2012 final installment only receiving a direct to DVD release in the United Kingdom.

Now, Paramount is hoping to breathe some life back into this franchise with an all-new reboot. So let’s take a look at everything we know about the all-new Dungeons & Dragons. What will the plot revolve around? Who has been lined up in the cast? When and where can we expect to see it released? And what else should audiences know before the release?

The Plot: What We Know

As of this writing, we do not have many specific details about what story the movie will tell. The original 2000 film followed Empress Savina’s search for the Rod of Savrille to defeat the warlock Profion. The sequels largely did not continue the first film’s plot, focusing on new characters, timelines, and settings.

With this upcoming new installment, Paramount will likely want to remain as faithful to the original game as possible to appeal to all the fans who still love the RPG. In the nearly five decades since the game’s initial 1974 release, it still remains the most successful role-playing game in the United States, with at least 20 million people estimated to have played at one point. The game has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, especially due to the rise and public acceptance of the so-called “geek culture.” This culture includes TV series such as Game of Thrones and Stranger Things, as well as films in the Marvel and DC universes.

It seems like the time is right for Dungeons & Dragons to return to the big screen. However Paramount chooses to adapt the story, they should keep the game’s original and current fans in mind. All that we can do now is speculate about what we might see until more information is released in the coming weeks and months.

The Cast: What We Know

Chris Pine will lead the film’s cast, already well known to fans of geek culture, from his roles in the Star Trek and Wonder Woman film franchises. While we know he is starring, we do not yet know what character Pine is playing, nor how he will connect to the main story. Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Rege-Jean Page were the next stars added after Pine, with all of their roles unknown as well.

Hugh Grant will be playing the movie’s main antagonist, with further details still under wraps. The remainder of the cast will be rounded out with Chloe Coleman, Sophia Lillis, and Daisy Head. These roles are unknown as well, but there is one casting that is confirmed, with Jason Wong set to play the role of Drallas.

More details on additional casting, as well as roles of announced cast members, will likely follow in the coming months.

Release Date: What We Know

In December 2017, Dungeons & Dragons was given its first release date of July 23, 2021. The date was later pushed back to November 19, 2021, with the July date instead going to Mission: Impossible 7 (which itself was later delayed). COVID-related issues set the date back once again to May 27, 2022. Finally, in April 2021, the release was postponed to its current date of March 3, 2023.

Everything Else: TV Series Spin-Off

There seems to already be confidence that Dungeons & Dragons will be a success, as a spin-off television series was announced in January 2022. Led by filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, the TV series is described as the flagship installment in an expanded universe of “multiple” live-action series which will complement the films. President of eOne Michael Lombardo, which will distribute the upcoming TV series, said of the television plans, “We don’t want it to just be one show, so we are building out, developing out a multi-pronged approach for television, a number of scripted shows and unscripted, and we hope to be taking this out to the marketplace early next year.”

Paramount and eOne clearly recognize that this is the right time to bring Dungeons & Dragons back to the big and small screen, with the studios going all-in to establish a new franchise. If met with better critical and commercial reception than the original film series, the increased publicity could help the game to remain an integral part of our geek culture for years to come.
