Elizabeth Olsen Crashes SNL Sketch with Benedict Cumberbatch

A Doctor Strange 2 reunion happened on Saturday Night Live over the weekend when Elizabeth Olsen suddenly showed up. Timed with the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, star Benedict Cumberbatch returned to SNL to serve as the host of Saturday night’s newest episode. Arcade Fire served as the musical guest.

During the episode, a sketch aired featuring Cumberbatch playing himself. He was joined by SNL cast member Chloe Fineman who was attempting to impress the actor with her impersonations, ready to fill in for any of her co-stars as the show’s “Understudy.” This leads to a moment where Fineman suits up in a Scarlet Witch outfit to trick Cumberbatch, and the SNL host believes he’s talking to Olsen. He is confused into thinking the “multiverse is real” when the real Olsen steps into the room moments later, which had Cumberbatch seeing double. You can watch the skit below.

Cumberbatch referencing the multiverse refers to the plot of Doctor Strange 2, which sees the titular Marvel superhero traversing through alternate timelines. Seeing multiple versions of one character is par for the course for Doctor Strange, but while that’s normal for his character, it’s not so much for the actor who’s befuddled to see two Elizbeth Olsens in front of him.

Elizabeth Olsen Has Drawn High Praise with Doctor Strange 2

One of the big takeaways of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is how much its lead stars shine. Some fans and critics even say that Olsen steals the show with her role as Scarlet Witch. Without getting into spoilers here, this is Wanda like we’ve never seen her before, but it works so well thanks to how effective Olsen is in bringing that character to life.

“It was so fun for me because all these years I’ve been playing a character who is struggling,” Olsen said of filming the new sequel, per Harper’s Bazaar UK. “Now, she has clarity for the first time — she knows exactly what she wants, and she doesn’t want to apologize for it… I think there’s a womanliness that comes with that: a strength in feeling completely entitled.”

Teasing more to come, Olsen added, “I love playing characters whose actions people disagree with. In a world where we don’t really care to understand other points of view, I feel like if we as an audience can have empathy for people we don’t agree with, that’s a good thing. Then I can kind of be their lawyer and defend them. I get behind their actions, even if I don’t agree with them… I think Wanda’s always around the corner, so I don’t feel bad saying goodbye to her.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters where it’s currently racking up the profits as the No. 1 movie of the weekend. You can watch the episode where Olsen surprises Benedict Cumberbatch on Saturday Night Live by finding it streaming on Peacock.
