The Deer King Trailer and Release Dates Announced by GKIDS

When The Deer King was initially announced in 2018, fans have been on the edge of their seats ever since. After several delays, we finally have a full trailer from distributor GKIDS. The trailer and synopsis can both be viewed below.

In the aftermath of a brutal war, former soldier Van toils in a mine controlled by the ruling empire. One day, his solitary existence is upended when a pack of wild dogs carrying a deadly and incurable disease attack, leaving only Van and a young girl named Yuna as survivors. Finally free, the pair seek out a simple existence in the countryside but are pursued by nefarious forces. Intent on protecting Yuna at all costs, Van must uncover the true cause of the plague ravaging the kingdom—and its possible cure.

Based on the light novel series of the same name, by Nahoko Uehashi, The Deer King tells a story of plague, war, and love. The film is directed by Masashi Ando, whose previous credits include animation director on Your Name, Tokyo Godfathers, and When Marnie Was There. This will be his debut as a director. Directing with him is Masayuki Miyaji, whose previous directing credits include Fusé: Memoirs of a Huntress and Xam’d: Lost Memories. Credited with penning the script is Taku Kishimoto, whose previous writing credits include Usagi Drop, Erased, and Haikyuu.

Harumi Fuuki, who previously composed music for Miss Hokusai and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, is credited with composing the score of the film. Production of the film was handled by studio Production I.G., who is well known for producing Ghost in the Shell, A Letter to Momo, and Miss Hokusai. The latter two films are already distributed by GKIDS. Starring in The Deer King are Shin’ichi Tsutsumi (2010’s Space Battleship Yamato) as Van, Hisui Kimura as Yuna, and Ryoma Takeuchi (Kamen Rider Drive) as Hossaru.

Blood Ties Matter Not

The Deer King screened last June for that year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. It went on to screen at the 2021 Fantasia International Film Festival and won the Bronze Audience Award. The film then went on to screen at the Animation Is Film Festival in Los Angeles that September. GKIDS will be handling the distribution for the film and will be partnering with Fathom Events to bring the film to general audiences this July.

The Deer King will be a two-day fan preview event screening nationwide. On Wednesday, July 13th the film will premiere in its original Japanese language. On Thursday, July 14th, the film will premiere with an English dub. The screenings will also feature an exclusive special introduction from Masashi Ando. The Deer King is another creative debut from a former Studio Ghibli alumnus. Judging from the trailer, the film promises something beautiful for the eyes. Gorgeous visuals, a sweeping score, and a story about protecting the ones you love.
