Following many, many years of waiting, a God of War adaptation is now officially in the works, courtesy of Amazon. Speaking at a recent Sony Business Briefing, company president Jim Ryan revealed (via Twitter user David Gibson) that God of War will become a series set to be released on Amazon Prime Video and that it will finally bring the Kratos saga to screens.

The announcement that the God of War project has finally been given the green light comes alongside planned adaptations for other video game franchises Horizon Zero Dawn, which will land on Netflix, and the racing game Gran Turismo, which has not yet been given a platform.

Created by David Jaffe at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, God of War is an action-adventure video game franchise that first began in 2005. The story follows the titular protagonist, Kratos, a Spartan warrior who later becomes the God of War after he is tricked into killing his family by his former master, the original Greek god of war, Ares. Seeking vengeance, Kratos wages war on the gods, setting off a series of events that leads to wars with the mythological pantheons.

Since then, the video game franchise has exploded, with several follow-up adventures released, which see Kratos take the battle to all manner of gods and monsters from Greek and Norse mythology. The God of War franchise now consists of around 15 games, only six of which are considered part of the main series.

God of War Fans Would Love to See Guardians of the Galaxy Star Dave Bautista as Kratos

The latest installment in the series was released in 2018 and follows an aged Kratos and his young son, Atreus. The story picks up following the death of Kratos’ second wife, as he and Atreus embark on a journey to fulfill her request that her ashes be spread at the highest peak of the nine realms. Keeping his tragic, all-powerful past from his son, the pair come into conflict with monsters and gods from the realm of Norse mythology. A follow-up, God of War Ragnarök, is now scheduled for release in 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

While there has been no further information regarding the direction of the Prime Video God of War series, there are several ways that the material could be adapted. The studio, however, may go with the simple route of starting at the beginning before following Kratos through to family life.

God of War fans have been waiting for an adaptation since as far back as 2005. In that time, fans have had their say over who they would like to see lead the project as Kratos, with many agreeing that Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista would cut the perfect figure as the ax-wielding warrior.

Rumors of a God of War series began to circulate earlier this year, and with the project now confirmed, we can safely assume that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, creators of The Expanse, and Rafe Judkins, the showrunner for The Wheel of Time, will be involved as was reported at the time. No release date window for these projects has yet been announced.
