Hulu’s Dollface Canceled After Season 2

Posted 2022/05/11 4 0

Hulu has canceled Dollface shortly after its season two premiere, TVLine has confirmed. The comedy series followed a group of friends, played by Kat Dennings, Shay Mitchell, Brenda Song, and Esther Povitsky, as they navigated romantic relationships, friendships, and self-discovery. The series began streaming on Hulu in November 2019 and was created by Jordan Weiss.

Weiss, along with creating and writing the series, served as executive producer alongside executive producers Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara from LuckyChap Entertainment, Bryan Unkeless, and Scott Morgan for Clubhouse Pictures, Nicole King and Dennings. Dollface was produced by ABC Signature Studio.

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

Season one of the series introduced viewers to Jules, played by Dennings, working to re-establish friendships with college best friends Madison (Song), and Stella (Mitchell), after she is dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Jeremy (Connor Hines). The three quickly welcomed Izzy (Povitsky), a colleague of Jules at Woöm (think of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop), into their friend group.

The show sometimes relied on magical realism to tell Jules’ story, and through her vivid imagination, we met a Cat Lady bus driver, who is a woman with a cat head, and experienced a Wizard of Oz-themed episode involving, of course, a pair of red shoes. Season one featured Beth Grant (The Mindy Project), Malin Akerman (The Utopian Society), and Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) in recurring roles, and Macaulay Culkin (American Horror Story: Double Feature) and show executive producer Margot Robbie in guest roles.

Dollface’s Season Two Recently Released

Dollface was renewed for a second season in January 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, production was delayed. The sophomore season was released more than two years after the renewal announcement, on February 11, 2022. The show addressed the pandemic and kicked off with Jules and Madison quarantining together. Madison, who had been working from home, loses her job. The second season featured less of Jules’ fantasies and focused more on relationship troubles, strengthening communication in female friendships, and evolving career goals.

Season two featured recurring roles from Luke Cook (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Lilly Singh (Life in Pieces), and Corinne Foxx (Beat Shazam) and guest appearances from Gilles Marini (Brothers & Sisters) and Jennifer Grey (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off).

The decision to cancel Dollface comes quickly after the release of its second season. While no official statement has been given on why the streamer has decided to pull the plug, reviews for season two of the show were less favorable. The show had 20 episodes, which are all currently streaming on Hulu.
