John Cena’s Coyote vs. ACME Movie Removed From Warner Bros. Release Schedule

CinemaCon announced that Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie will be getting the July 21, 2023 slot previously occupied by Cena’s Looney Tunes film.

The Warner Bros. CinemaCon panel was expected to bring some new looks at the studio’s biggest offerings of the next year, but one of its recently announced movies was seemingly bumped to a much later date by the incoming Barbie movie. That film is the John Cena live-action/animated hybrid movie Coyote vs. ACME, which was only announced as being in development last month. At the time, the comedy movie, which sees the iconic cartoon character Wile E. Coyote suing ACME over their frequently dangerous and faulty products, was slated to arrive on July 21, 2023. That spot has now been taken and Cena’s movie has been marked as “Unscheduled.”

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

While this is a disappointing update for fans of Cena and the fun-sounding take on Wile E. Coyote’s never-ending quest to capture Roadrunner, the reality seems to be more around Warner Bros. wanting to put out Barbie in the middle of summer to capitalize on the blockbuster season. They clearly expect Barbie to do more business in that slot than Coyote vs. ACME. It is perhaps odd that Warner Bros. would choose to take the movie off the schedule entirely rather than give it an immediate new date, but perhaps they are just waiting to see where it can fit without going into direct competition with any of the other big movies already tied down to dates.

It was not addressed in the panel whether this is a sign that the hybrid movie is dropping down Warner Bros. list of priorities or whether it is simply a matter of timing and a new date will be coming down the line very soon. Either way, it looks like Cena’s new movie will have to wait a little longer than planned to make its debut in cinemas.

John Cena is Looking Forward to Starring Alongside Looney Tunes Legend

As well as John Cena, Coyote vs. ACME will also star Will Forte and Lana Condor, while screenplay duties have been shared by Samy Burch and none other than Peacemaker director James Gunn. Of course, Cena and Gunn have developed a great friendship since working together on the DC series and The Suicide Squad movie before it, and the project is one that Cena is relishing the chance to participate. He told Entertainment Weekly:

“Man, I’m very fortunate because it’s a different role for me, so I can’t wait. I’m able to do a smaller film called The Independent, which is a different role for me, and Peacemaker has been an entirely different role for me. A lot of audience members have a different perspective of what I can offer and that’s a really tough hill to climb. Coyote vs. Acme is one of those situations. I’m really happy that Warner Bros. gave me another opportunity to be involved with something that. Like I said, it’s a different role for me and hopefully it will have the same result as Peacemaker, it will be a chance to hone my craft on something a little different,” Cena added. “I’m really excited for it.”
