Latest Doctor Strange 2 TV Spot Puts the Focus on the Horror

The latest TV spot for the upcoming Marvel installment Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness focuses squarely on the horror elements, as Doctor Strange and The Scarlet Witch begin to bring the frights to the MCU. Shared to social media by Doctor Strange Updates, the footage provides further looks at a battle between Doctor Strange and his sinister variant, a blood-soaked Scarlet Witch, and the zombie version of the Master of the Mystic Arts.

While we have seen many of these shots before in earlier trailers and TV spots, the way they have been put together is of most interest. Alongside the new footage of Strange versus Dark Strange, which shows the warring wizards rip musical notes off of sheet music and transforming them into magical runes, as well as a shot of Wanda Maximoff being followed by the eyes in a photo of herself, this TV spot communicates the horror-flare more than any that have come before it.

The horror-infused MCU outing should come as little surprise, considering that Evil Dead director Sam Raimi is at the helm. The filmmaker recently teased the terror of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, revealing that this had been Marvel Studios’ intention from the beginning. “I think what [Kevin] meant, from my point of view, is that this film has a flavor of horror to it,” Raimi explained. “I think when the original director, Scott Derrickson, and Kevin promoted the coming of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, they said that it was going to be the first Marvel superhero film that had an element of horror to it. I hope I’m not misquoting them. But even after Scott left the picture due to creative differences, that was still the mandate — to make the first Marvel film that had an element of horror. So, I kept true to their original statements.”

Exploring the Multiverse is a Frightening Endeavor

As well as the cameos and other surprises inherent in the multiverse, the horror will come from the variants and alternate dimensions. “I think that’s what Kevin means, because it is spooky at some times and scary at others,” Raimi continued. “It’s unknown what you’ll find in the multiverse. It’s within that unknown that suspense and darkness exists. A tool to titillate the audience’s fear. Plus, Doctor Strange in the comics has always dealt in universes and dimensions that were quite spooky, so we tried to bring some of that into this film.”

Directed by Sam Raimi, written by Michael Waldron, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finds the Master of the Mystic Arts seeking out allies to tackle the crumbling multiverse and stop a sinister new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to premiere on May 2, 2022, and will be released in the United States on May 6, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
