The latest poster for Pixar’s Lightyear has the beloved Space Ranger looking out into the star-spangled cosmos as he prepares to head off into the unknown and journey to infinity and beyond. Released courtesy of Disney and Pixar, this latest promo is joined by a pair of new images from Lightyear, which is due to land in theaters later this year.

The first image from Lightyear depicts Buzz preparing to depart and head off into the unknown, while the second shows the Space Ranger discussing his upcoming mission with a fellow space exploring colleague. While the images do not give much away in terms of plot, they do give us the opportunity to stare in awe at the animation on display, with the hugely talented creatives at Pixar once again demonstrating why they have been considered the best in the business for so long.

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

Lightyear will act as both a Toy Story spinoff and an in-universe movie, as the story revolves around the origin of the fictional Buzz Lightyear, the character who inspired the action figure in the Toy Story franchise. Lightyear follows Buzz as he prepares to embark on his first test flight to explore new galaxies for Star Command. Marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew, Buzz must try to find a way back home through space and time. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda. Buzz might just be the only hope to stop him, and save the galaxy.

The poster and images have been released alongside a new trailer for Lightyear, which reveals several intriguing details about the movie, including the fact that Buzz will journey across time as well as space.

Directed by Angus MacLane, Lightyear stars Captain America himself, Chris Evans, as the voice of the title character. The Pixar outing will also boast a stellar supporting cast alongside the Marvel actor and includes Keke Palmer as Izzy Hawthorne, Dale Soules as Steel, Taika Waititi as Morrison, Peter Sohn as Sox, Uzo Aduba as Alicia Hawthorne, Mary McDonald-Lewis as Qurinside, Efren Ramirez as Diaz, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, and James Brolin as Emperor Zurg.

Lightyear Will Explore the Origins of the Space Ranger Who Inspired the Toy

Writer and director Angus MacLane has since explained how Lightyear will fit into the Pixar universe, and reveals that he has always wanted to move away from the plastic figure and explore the real-life Buzz Lightyear. “Buzz’s world was always something I was excited about,” the filmmaker said previously. “In Toy Story, there seemed to be this incredible backstory to him being a Space Ranger that’s only touched upon, and I always wanted to explore that world further. So my ‘Lighytear’ pitch was, ‘What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?’ I wanted to see that movie. And now I’m lucky enough to get to make it.”

Lightyear is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 17, 2022.
