David Fincher, who has been involved as a producer with Love, Death + Robots since 2019, will direct an episode for Volume 3.

David Fincher’s first time directing an animated feature will be on Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots. The Academy Award Winner has worked on the series as an executive producer since the animated anthology’s 2019 launch. Netflix dropped the Volume 3 trailer today, giving viewers a sneak peek at all nine upcoming episodes.

Fincher stepped into the cirector’s chair for episode two: Bad Travelling. Based on the short story by Neal Asher, the episode is written by Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, and animated by visual effects company Blur Studio. Netflix’s synopsis for the episode is below.

“A jable shark-hunting sailing vessel is attacked by a giant crustacean whose size and intelligence is matched only by its appetite. Mutiny, betrayal and ventriloquism with a corpse… welcome aboard the animation directing debut of David Fincher.”

On May 10, Fincher, Miller and supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda) will participate in a special event with Alamo Drafthouse theaters. Audiences in 19 cities across the United States will be treated to select episodes from the first two volumes of Love, Death + Robots. A livestream Q&A with Fincher, Miller and Nelson will follow. Volume 3 of the Emmy-winning series hits Netflix May 20.

Fincher’s Other Projects

While Netflix’s popular series Mindhunter is currently on hold, Fincher has not completely taken the possibility of a third season off the table. While fans of the show patiently wait, Fincher has been busy with The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton. The film, written by Andrew Kevin Walker, is based on a French graphic novel series by Alexis Nolent about an assassin whose conscience starts to get the best of him. It will stream on Netflix.

Currently in post production, The Killer is Fincher’s follow-up to the 2020 film Mank about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz.

Fincher got his start in directing music videos. His first feature film was Alien 3 in 1992. He went on to direct Se7en, where he worked with screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, Fight Club, Zodiac, and Gone Girl, among others. In 2013, he began his voyage into television, working as executive producer and director for the series House of Cards.
