Magnum P.I. Reboot Canceled After Four Seasons at CBS

The new Magnum P.I. has reached the end of the road. CBS has officially canceled the rebooted series, per Deadline, which comes at a time when a large variety of different shows have been meeting a similar fate. Along with Magnum P.I., it was also reported that the network would be canning B Positive, Good Sam, How We Roll, and United States of Al.

Peter Lenkov, who developed the reboot and served as showrunner before his dismissal in 2020, reacted to the cancelation on Twitter. Responding to one fan praising the series, Lenkov said that it was his “dream come true rebooting it.” Another tweet has Lenkov expressing how proud he is that the series had made it to four seasons on network television, as the odds were against it ever getting past that first season as a reboot of an established show.

“Grateful it even happened,” Lenkov said. “Getting a reboot to click is hard… and this one did. Lucky for that.”

Actor Tim Kang, who appeared in the series as Detective Gordon Katsumoto, also lamented the news on social media. Kang admitted that it was disappointing that the show wouldn’t move forward but thanked the fans for the support while saying farewell to the Magnum P.I. reboot.

“Thank you to all of you for supporting Magnum P.I. through 4 seasons. We never would have gotten this far without you,” Kang wrote. “The Magnum writers created fun and compelling stories week after week and it’s been an honor being a part of this cast and crew. Aloha!”

Sharing an article about the news, Cade actor Martin Martinez added, “I guess our fate has been decided. It’s unfortunate, despite so many compliments mentioned in this write-p. Thanks for believing in the Cade story! BUT How does a Magnum PI 3 picture/ film franchise sound though? anyways, MAHALO!!!!”

Magnum P.I. Rebooted an Established Series

Based on the 1980s TV series starring Tom Selleck, Magnum P.I. was developed by Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim. Jay Hernandez stars as Thomas Magnum, a new incarnation of the role previously played by Selleck. The series follows Magnum, a former Navy SEAL turned private investigator, as he solves crimes in Hawaii. Along with Hernandez, the series also stars Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill, and Tim Kang.

The odds are always against a reboot as fans are usually not very receptive to popular movies and TV shows from years past getting reimagined. Magnum P.I. defied the odds by finding success, debuting with pretty strong ratings. While season 4 ratings were not as high as the freshman season, the series had still been a pretty strong contender and was rather popular.

As for what caused the cancelation, Deadline reports that it was a “business decision” as talks had stalled over the license fee. As Magnum P.I. came from an outside studio, this would cost much more than an in-house program. The drama pilots CBS has in store this season may have also helped squeeze out Magnum P.I. from the lineup.
