Mindhunter Director Reveals Details of Proposed Season 3

Mindhunter director Andrew Dominik has revealed several details regarding the direction of a proposed season 3 of the acclaimed Netflix show. Speaking with Collider, Dominik, who directed several episodes of Mindhunter Season 2, including the one featuring Charles Manson, revealed that a third series would have taken FBI profilers Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) out of the basement and transported them to the glitz, glamour, and serial killings of Hollywood.

“What they were going to do with Season 3 was they were going to go [to] Hollywood. So one of them was going to be hooking up with Jonathan Demme and the other one was going to be hooking up with Michael Mann. And it was all going to be about profiling making it into the sort of zeitgeist, the public consciousness. It would’ve been… That was the season everyone was really waiting for to do, with when they sort of get out of the basement and start.”

Seeing Holden and Bill ‘make it’ as it were after so much time scurrying away in the dark, dank basement would have certainly been a satisfying experience for both the actors and audiences. According to Andrew Dominik, Mindhunter Season 3 would have continued to depict the progression of profiling from a mocked idea to something that was taken very seriously before making its way into the “zeitgeist” and all the way to Hollywood.

Dominik even states that season 3 was the story that “everyone was really waiting for to do,” making it even more tragic that audiences may never see it happen.

Mindhunter Star Jonathan Groff Has Said that Season 3 is Still Possible

The hit series was created by Joe Penhall and based on the 1995 true-crime book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. Guided and partly directed by Se7en and Fight Club filmmaker David Fincher, Mindhunter details the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at the FBI, revolving around FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they interview several high-profile serial killers in order to understand their psychology and hopefully stop similar crimes from happening in the future.

The first season of Mindhunter was released on Netflix back in 2017, with the second season coming in 2019. Both seasons were met with critical acclaim, with Mindhunter praised for its character development, cinematic visuals, and unique approach to the crowded crime genre.

While the development of a third season has been put on the back-burner due to David Fincher wanting to pursue other projects, Mindhunter fans would be unwise to hold their breath in anticipation of season 3. Despite this, star Jonathan Groff has recently offered some positivity to the scenario, saying that it is just as possible to a threequel to one of his other hits, Frozen. “I feel like, even though those projects seem very different, Frozen and Mindhunter, I feel like a third Frozen and a third season of Mindhunter are equally possible,” the actor said.

The first two seasons of Mindhunter are available to watch on Netflix.
