Mortal Kombat 2 Writer Gives Update: ‘Script Is Half Done’

Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater is taking on the new Mortal Kombat movie and is bringing some MCU sensibilities to the proceedings.

The reboot of Mortal Kombat received almost as many mixed reviews as the original movie version that preceded it. However, the film proved popular enough with audiences to warrant a sequel, and that has been in development for a little while now. Having worked on the Marvel Disney+ series Moon Knight, writer Jeremy Slater is also working on the new movie in the Mortal Kombat franchise and recently spoke to The Direct to update where the script is and what fans can expect.

While video game movies have been mostly misses in the past, the recent surge in the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, various Resident Evil projects and HBO Max’s upcoming The Last of Us has seen that perspective changing a little. Following the success of Moon Knight, Slater is now hoping to bring a bit of the MCU’s universe logic to the Mortal Kombat sequel.

“It’s really fun so far. We’re about halfway through the script. I’m working really closely with the director and the studios, and the game guys, and I think—I can’t say anything about the actual story, but I think they definitely learned some lessons the last time around in terms of, ‘Here’s the stuff fans responded to, and here’s what people liked out of the movie, and here’s the stuff that didn’t work out as well as we hoped.’ So we’re really looking at this as a chance to take everything that worked in the first one and do it even better and give the audience even more, and make something that is just incredibly satisfying, and really exciting, and unpredictable. I don’t think it’s necessarily going to have the same tone as the MCU, but it’s definitely going to have some of my sensibilities. That was part of my pitch to them. This is Mortal Kombat. We have guys who are ripping off their faces and breathing fire—it’s a weird universe, let’s embrace some of that weirdness, and let’s make a Mortal Kombat sequel that no one is expecting and that can kind of sneak in and blow everyone away.”

Mortal Kombat 2 Has Some Way to Go to Be a Huge Hit

Mortal Kombat was released during the pandemic, and while it managed to make $83 million from the box office, it found a home on HBO Max, quickly becoming one of their most significant new releases at the time. With many of the biggest movie releases now bringing in hundreds of millions though, Mortal Kombat 2 will have to pull out all the stops to ensure it isn’t finished by its competition.

Jeremy Slater has undoubtedly got some credentials behind him. As well as Moon Knight, he also previously worked on the first season of The Umbrella Academy for Netflix, which was popular enough to earn two more seasons – which by Netflix standards is nothing to be sniffed at. Whether Slater can pull out some magical combination moves of his own to bring something exciting to the world of Mortal Kombat is something we will have to wait and see.
