Nicolas Cage has confirmed he’s been speaking with Face/Off producer Neal H. Moritz about his potential involvement in the sequel.

The odds are looking much better for Nicolas Cage returning in Face/Off 2. Previously, it was reported that Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) would direct a Face/Off sequel with the filmmaker making it clear that it will be a direct sequel and not a reboot. It has since remained unclear if original stars Cage and John Travolta will be involved, but another update hints toward the return of Castor Troy.

Cage addressed the sequel in a new interview with ComicBook.com. While he’s not officially signed on, Cage revealed that he’s had “some phone calls” with producer Neal Moritz about doing the film. Cage also now says that it’s a “maybe” when it comes to possibly returning as Castor Troy in Face/Off 2.

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

“[A Face/Off sequel] I can talk about because, there have been some phone calls with Neal [Moritz], who I enjoyed very much working with on the first Face/Off. He’s somebody, he’s one of the true, great producers in Hollywood. And, they have been making some calls. The other ones like National Treasure, I mean, their priority was a TV show. God speed to them. But, maybe Face/Off, maybe.”

Recently, Cage bluntly said he’d be up for a return for Face/Off 2, but didn’t divulge if he’d yet been approached about the possibility. He had also mentioned the film in a separate interview with THR when he revealed that he hadn’t heard “hide nor hair” about the movie, but was in agreement that the new Face/Off needed to be a sequel and not a reboot. As the actor said in March:

“I have not heard hide nor hair about it. So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about National Treasure 3. It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure. Would [Face/Off 2] be an exciting movie to make? Oh, hell yeah. But John Woo was such a huge voice in that movie. It couldn’t be a remake. I think these filmmakers even said as much — that something like that would have to be a sequel.”

Nicolas Cage Might Return, But Will John Travolta John Him?

Directed by John Woo, Face/Off starred Nicolas Cage as criminal mastermind Castor Troy opposite John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer. In the film, Troy and Archer swap faces, unbeknownst to everyone else, as the arch-enemies assume one another’s lives. There has been no word yet from Travolta about the sequel and it remains a mystery if he’d be interested to return as Sean Archer.

However, another original Face/Off star is hoping to get the call. Joan Allen, who played Sean Archer’s wife Eve in the movie, said last year that she didn’t know anything about the film, though she was hoping to somehow get involved. No release date has been set and progress on the feature has been moving slowly, but perhaps the gears are finally turning with Nicolas Cage having some talks with producers.
