Peacock’s Angelyne: Plot, Cast, and Everything Else We Know

People are constantly mesmerized by celebrities, even just the nature of being a celebrity. They’re amazed by the glitzy clothes, the paparazzi following their every move, their public personas, and they don’t really care about the how. Kim Kardashian has made a name for herself and created multiple businesses while having an interesting start to fame. Even some current social media influencers are considered celebrities. It seems only once they’re in the limelight that they begin their actual careers.

It’s common to assume this grab for fame started with social media and reality TV, but people have always searched for fame for fame’s sake. This is where Peacock’s newest show, Angelyne, comes into play.

Showrunner Allison Miller has stated that the film will not be like any other biopic. “Angelyne is an homage to the real Angelyne, who became a cultural icon in Los Angeles. This isn’t the true story of Angelyne. It’s not a straightforward biopic.” Miller said that this story is more about what the icon represents. In that sense, “It’s a magical story, a hopeful story, a story about becoming the person you were meant to be and believing in your own inner strength to manifest your dreams.” Miller also states that the show is “about Los Angeles and everything the city means to people who move here and to people who dream about moving here.”

Here is everything we know so far about Angelyne.

What is Angelyne All About

Peacock’s upcoming limited series, Angelyne, will be a mockumentary-styled limited series following the life of ’80s billboard queen and Los Angeles icon, Angelyne. The series will dive into the icon’s career and her public life, as well as the people around her who became swept up in her extraordinary life and fame. The show is based on a 2017 The Hollywood Reporter article written by Gary Baum, which revealed the “glow-in-the-dark queen of the universe’s” real name and her life before Los Angeles.

Angelyne has always been incredibly conservative about her life before fame, something that surprises people given her latex ensembles, enormous décolletage, and hot pink Corvette that can be seen driving around Hollywood on any given day. The show will aim to highlight the contradiction between Angelyne’s two lives — a Polish immigrant’s daughter born to two Holocaust survivors and her extravagant public persona while living in Hollywood.

The Cast & Crew of Angelyne

The self-created ’80s pop culture icon will be portrayed by none other than star Emmy Rossum. The 35-year-old starlet is most recognizable from her time on the Showtime raunchy dramedy series Shameless as Fiona Gallagher and in the 2004 on-screen adaptation of the famed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, The Phantom of the Opera as the young ingenue Christine Daaé. Rossum has received multiple award nominations for her time as Fiona and received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her role in The Phantom of the Opera.

She is joined by fellow actors Alex Karpovsky (Homecoming, 2018-2019), Martin Freeman (The Hobbit franchise), Lukas Gage (Euphoria, 2019), Michael Angarano (This is Us, 2019-2021), Hamlisch Linklater (The Big Short, 2015), Molly Ephraim (Last Man Standing, 2011-2021), Charlie Rowe (Rocketman, 2019), David Krumholtz (The Deuce, 2017-2019) and Antjuan Tobias (Scandal, 2012-2018).

The limited series was created by Nancy Oliver, who served as producer on the HBO series True Blood (2008-2011) as well as Windfall (2006) and Six Feet Under (2001-2005). The series is headed by showrunner and executive producer Allison Miller, known for her work as a writer for Spartacus (2012-2013). She is joined in her executive producer duties by none other than Angelyne herself, Rossum and her husband Sam Esmail, and Lucy Tcherniak of The End of the F***ing World (2017) and Station Eleven (2022), who also serves as director with Matt Spicer. Spicer has previously worked as a producer on the Hulu series Dollface (2019). The writer, Gary Baum, whose article kickstarted the show, served as a consultant for the series.

Rossum has commented to THR on the nature of the larger-than-life character stating, “She’s as if Marilyn Monroe got into an easy bake oven with an ’80s punk Barbie Doll, and a dose of new age spirituality.” The star also discussed her dedication to the project, saying, “I’ve spent the better part of four years thinking, living, and breathing this project. I love Angelyne.” Rossum also admires the icon, calling her “a trailblazer, a hustler, a visionary, the original influencer, a living, breathing piece of art.” Overall, with the subject being so outlandish and camp, the show sounds like an incredibly delightful combination, and Rossum wishes for the audience to “fall in love with her magic.”

Release Date

The limited show will be released in full on May 19, 2022, on the NBCUniversal streamer Peacock and will consist of five episodes.
