Raising Dion Canceled at Netflix After Two Seasons

It’s going to be a two-season run for Raising Dion. Months after debuting its second season in February, Netflix has canceled the series with no plans to develop any new episodes for a third season. The news was confirmed by series star Sammi Haney (Esperanza) with an emotional statement posted on Instagram, expressing sadness over the series ending but looking forward to other creative opportunities.

“Sad to say that Raising Dion is CANCELED,” Haney says in the caption. “Thank you for all of the amazing support we got from all of our wonderful fans! Season 2 was a success, equal to Season 1, even if just looking at how many people watched all of it and wanted a season 3! The only ‘silver lining’ is that this does free me up to pursue other roles. My Netflix contract kept me from accepting other major roles offered to me (1 actually written with me in mind) on other tv shows! So if you work for a major studio, hit me up again, I’m ready!”

Based on the original comic book of the same name by Dennis Liu, Raising Dion follows a woman named Nicole Warren (Alisha Wainwright) raising her son Dion after her husband’s death. As if the life of a single parent was not difficult enough, Nicole struggles with keeping her son Dion’s (Ja’Siah Young) abilities a secret when she learns that he possesses superpowers. Along with Wainwright and Young, the series stars Jazmyn Simon, Sammi Haney, Jason Ritter, Griffin Robert Faulkner, Josh Ventura, Rome Flynn, Abriana Davis, and Ali Ahn, with Michael B. Jordan making a special appearance.

Raising Dion’s Alisha Wainwright Says Nicole Evolved Over Two Seasons

Two seasons is not a long run for any series, but it did allow for Alisha Wainwright to see some growth in her character. As Nicole comes to terms with Dion’s abilities, she comes to realize that her son is simultaneously growing up, and at a certain point, she’s going to have to let him go so he can continue to grow.

“By the middle of season two, she realizes, ‘Oh, maybe I’m not this person who has control over everything. Maybe I really have to learn again that it’s about relinquishing control,'” Wainwright said in a previous interview with PopSugar. “Because at the end of the day, your kids are going to grow up and be their own people.”

She added, “What I can only imagine is that parenthood is a lot about doing everything you can to create the space for your child to thrive knowing that, at some point, they’re going to leave the nest and you just kind of have to accept that and be proud of whatever happens.”

You can stream both seasons of Raising Dion on Netflix, just don’t hold your breath for a third season.
