New footage from the upcoming DC sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, brings the humor and offers more details regarding the movie’s plot. The latest footage from Shazam! Fury of the Gods debuted at CinemaCon 2022, which is now underway in Las Vegas, with several of the cast also in attendance.

The trailer begins by reuniting us with Shazam himself, who is shown “dining in Paris with what appears to be Wonder Woman, whom he’s wooing, suggesting they could be known as the ‘Hottie Goddies’ or ‘Shezam.’” Wonder Woman is filmed from behind as it is not Gal Gadot in the costume, something which is played for laughs when she transforms into Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard. The Wizard has arrived to tell his champion that “he must ‘fight for your family, fight for the world,’” the description from Deadline continues.

The theme of family will clearly run deep throughout Shazam! Fury of the Gods, with the superhero telling Helen Mirren’s character, Hespera, that he has seen all of the Fast and Furious movies and that he knows “saving the world is all about family.” The footage then gives us a glimpse at some of the fantastical superhero action that will be on display as the Shazam family arrives and battles a giant dragon with glowing eyes.

In terms of the plot, the trailer revealed that both Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu will portray the daughters of Atlas, with the Shazam family tackling the threat posed by the barrier between worlds beginning to break down. Certainly, the stakes in Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be sky-high.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Stars Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel & Helen Mirren Were in Attendance

The CinemaCon panel also featured Shazam! Fury of the Gods cast members Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel, and Helen Mirren, who provided a few more details about the comic book movie sequel. Levi described Shazam! Fury of the Gods as “super dreamy getting the gang back together” adding that the follow-up will retain what made the first outing so successful. “We don’t want to veer from the magic we were able to find in the first movie, balancing action, comedy, drama and heart. That’s a massive part of what people connected to in the first movie.”

Asher Angel, who plays the teenage Billy Batson, offered further details regarding where the sequel finds the character. “The last time everyone saw Billy he was a kid, and he’s grown up and matured,” the actor said. “I would say adulthood is on the horizon and it’s scary because he doesn’t know what’s going to happen to him. That weighs pretty heavily on him and he’s trying to enjoy the moment and, hey, have these superpowers.”

Finally, Helen Mirren praised the cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods saying, “The most wonderful crazy family that I’ve had the honor to be a small part of. You just have to hold your nose and jump into the deep end and allow the whirlwind to take you.”

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 16, 2022.
