Sicario 3: Josh Brolin Provides Positive Update on Development of Sequel

Posted 2022/05/11 2 0

Sicario star Josh Brolin has offered some hope to those who would like to see the action thriller franchise return for a third outing. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Brolin was asked whether plans for a Sicario 3 had been abandoned. Rather than dash hopes and ruin people’s days, Brolin instead said that the sequel “deserves” to be made. No matter how long it takes.

“I just don’t know when we’ll do it. We may be 80. (Laughs.) But it’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds. It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it. So don’t give up! (Laughs.)”

Released in 2015 and directed by Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve from a script written by Taylor Sheridan, the first Sicario introduces audiences to a grim and gloomy world of drug cartels, hitmen, and revenge. The first outing follows a principled FBI agent (Emily Blunt) who is enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartel. Along the way she comes across Benicio del Toro as Alejandro Gillick, a former Mexican Prosecutor turned CIA trained assassin. The movie was met with rave reviews upon release, ultimately being nominated for several awards at the 88th Academy Awards.

Sicario later spawned a sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which put Josh Brolin’s CIA Officer Matt Graver in more of a central role as it drops him and us into the middle of a drug war at the U.S.-Mexico border and the United States government’s attempt to incite conflict among the warring cartels.

While the follow-up was not as well-received as its Oscar-nominated predecessor, both critics and fans nonetheless enjoyed a return to the conflict, and a third movie, titled Sicario: Capos, has been planned since shortly after the release of Sicario: Day of the Soldado back in 2018.

Is Sicario: Capos Something That You Would Like to See on the Big Screen?

Now that Josh Brolin has revealed some insight into what is going on behind the scenes with the third installment in the Sicario series, fans of the franchise will be left wondering how long we may be waiting to see such a project land on the big screen. According to Brolin, it could be a while, with the actor stating that he would reprise the role again if it takes decades.

Sicario: Capos producer Molly Smith has said the project was still in development as recently as last year, and with Brolin clearly on board, it is looking increasingly likely that Sicario 3 will happen eventually. So, is this a movie that you would be excited to see?

For now, Josh Brolin has plenty on his plate, with the actor leading the sci-fi neo-Western mystery series Outer Range for Amazon Prime Video. He is also due to reprise the role of Gurney Halleck in the upcoming sci-fi epic sequel, Dune: Part Two.
