Terry Pratchett fans are going to want to keep their eyes peeled. Sky Cinema has unveiled the first trailer for their next animated adventure, The Amazing Maurice. The trailer and synopsis can be viewed below.

In The Amazing Maurice, a Sky Original, Maurice is a streetwise ginger cat who comes up with a money-making scam by befriending a group of self-taught talking rats. When Maurice and the rodents reach the stricken town of Bad Blintz, they meet a bookworm called Malicia and their little con soon goes down the drain.

The Amazing Maurice is based on the book The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Sir Terry Pratchett. The novel is part of the author’s famous Discworld series, of which it is entry #28. The book is aimed for a younger audience than most of the other Discworld novels, which makes it prime material to adapt into an animated film. That being said, the trailer seems to avoid any hints of the film taking place on the iconic disc as well as a certain cameo that is known to show up repeatedly in the books.

The Amazing Maurice is directed by Toby Genkel (A Stork’s Journey, Thor: Legend of the Magical Hammer). Hugh Laurie (Avenue 5, House) stars the titular Amazing Maurice, the scheming cat who finds himself in charge of a clan of intelligent rats. Joining Laurie is Himesh Patel (Station Eleven, Avenue 5) as Keith, a human boy who is roped in with Maurice to play out his scams. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) is credited as Malicia, the story fanatic and mystery enthusiast who joins with the group to figure out what is going on with the rat problem in the town. Joining the trio as the rats are Gemma Arterton (The Kings’ Man) as Peaches, Joe Sugg (Thatcher Joe) as Sardines, Ariyon Bakare (His Dark Materials) as Darktan, and Julie Atherton (Doctors) as Nourishing.

Not Your Average Fairy Tail

The Amazing Maurice is yet another entry in the adaptations of Terry Pratchett’s work. The author is most famous for his Discworld series which spans 41 novels, starting with The Colour of Magic in 1983 and ending with The Shepherd’s Crown in 2015. Many of the books have been adapted to stage, television, comics, audio dramas, and even video games. Unsurprisingly, this will not be the first time one of the Discworld novels will be adapted through animation. In the 1990s, Cosgrove Hall adapted the two books Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters into their own individual animated television miniseries.

When it comes to adapting the books to film, it has always been a bumpy road. Previous movie adaptations were for television rather than the cinema. This is in part due to the overall world of the books being complex for newcomers. The Amazing Maurice is a safer book to adapt compared to most of the others due to it being a simpler story (written with a younger audience in mind by the author himself).

Because of this, the film runs the risk of not appealing to older book fans. But at the same time, there’s the opportunity of the film drawing in new fans into this timeless world. We’ll just have to wait and see when the film premieres in December of this year.
