Sony Confirms Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel in Development

During their CinemaCon panel, Sony announced that a fifth Ghostbusters movie is in the works following the success of Afterlife last year.

Following the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife last year, all everyone wanted to know was how long it would be until Sony announced a sequel? Now it seems that question has been answered during Sony’s panel at CinemaCon on Monday, as the studio’s closing sizzle reel revealed that another new Ghostbusters movie is in development. Although it is the early stages and there are no details around cast or storyline confirmed yet, this will be welcome news to the fans who lapped up the franchise’s return last November.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife turned out to be the sequel that many fans of the New York spook catchers had been waiting three decades to see, and for all of its nostalgic Easter eggs and sentimentality, the movie managed to both please old and new fans with a combination of Ghostbusters callbacks with a bit of a Stranger Things adventure added into the mix thanks to the inclusion of its primarily young cast featuring the likes of Finn Wolfhard and Mackenzie Grace.

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

Despite arriving during the pandemic, Ghostbusters: Afterlife became one of the few movies of 2021 to pass $100 million domestically, and it ended its cinematic run on a worldwide gross of just shy of $200 million, making it a big hit considering the theatrical climate at the time. While Sony seemed likely to want to capitalize on the new interest in the franchise following the 2016 reboot’s poor performance with critics and audiences, their announcement during CinemaCon is the first official word of a new film being in the works.

Will the Original Ghostbusters Cast Return One More Time for an Afterlife Sequel?

It took a long time to persuade the original Ghostbusters cast to reprise their roles, especially in the case of Bill Murray, who for years tried to avoid anything to do with the franchise as he explored more serious acting roles, so would they return again for a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife? While all of the original stars may not return, Ernie Hudson has made it clear that he would love to be part of the franchise’s future following the post credit scene of the movie, which saw his character returning Ecto-1 to its firehouse home.

“It’s almost comforting,” Hudson told Yahoo. “This movie has been such a big part of my life for almost 40 years. It’s something I’ve never been able to get away from — not that I’ve tried — but the fans have always kept Winston at the forefront and really connected to him. To be on the set and to see the guys in the jumpsuits, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts and to meet this new cast, I realized this is something that’s going to move into the future. It’s nice to have it finally resolved.”

As well as the new movie, fans can also look forward to another Ghostbusters video game, which Hudson revealed last year is also in the works, which would see the stars returning to voice their respective characters. As of yet, there has been no word of when that could come to fruition, but it looked like recording sessions were being set up for some time in the first half of this year.
