Spawn Reboot’s Todd McFarlane Says It’s Now or Never: ‘Something Has to Happen’

After all this time, will we ever see comic book legend Todd McFarlane’s reboot of Spawn? Well, according to the man himself, something’s gotta give. Speaking with, McFarlane believes that there are far too many people who want to see the Spawn reboot happen for things not to come together eventually. Perhaps even in the next few months, as audiences and studios clamor for more comic book movies.

“Something’s going to give in the next few months, right? There’s too many people pushing in that direction, again I’ve got a call later today on that very subject. You can imagine Spider-Man makes a billion dollars and everybody sort of gets sort of… I mean they were already crazy, now they just got twice as crazy. I mean they got crazy when the only movies that were making money were superheroes, and then Venom goes and rocks it, and then Spider-Man comes in and obliterates it, so now they’re almost singular in their mindset of what kind of ideas they’ve got. So something has to happen. We’ll never get to the top of the mountain if we can’t do it now, with everybody wanting to do it now. Fingers crossed. I would say it’s now or never.”

Thanks to all the money being brought in by the likes of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Marvel villain Venom, McFarlane feels that it will be just a matter of time before the Spawn reboot is given the go-ahead. Of course, comic book movies are the most popular genre of the modern cinematic era, and while Spawn is something of a lesser-known character, the property certainly has the potential to be popular with audiences. Concluding with “it’s now or never,” McFarlane clearly believes that they should be striking while the iron is still searingly hot.

The Spawn Reboot Has Been in Development for a While Now

Todd McFarlane has been trying to get the Spawn reboot off the ground for some time now. Created by McFarlane in the early 90s, Spawn begins life as an assassin named Albert Francis Simmons before being murdered and making a deal to become a Hellspawn. While he begins by doing Hell’s bidding, Spawn soon finds a new purpose in stopping evil, battling street gangs and organized crime as an antihero. The character has been adapted for the screen before, back in 1997, and starring Michael Jai White.

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Jamie Foxx has been signed on to play the role of Spawn for years, and while it is unknown whether he is still attached to the project, producer Jason Blum has teased what audiences can expect from the reboot. “It’s gonna be very different, it’s gonna be very edgy,” Blum said of the approach. “What excited me about it is that Spawn is kind of the last great unexploited comic. So that seemed like an amazing opportunity. It’s taken longer than I hoped it would have to get the story right, but we’re still working on it.”

Do you agree that it’s now or never Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot?
