Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have revealed some startling and exciting details regarding the upcoming animated sequel while appearing at CinemaCon 2022. Shared by Collider’s Steven Weintraub, Lord and Miller announced that the Sony follow-up will include “240 characters” and the story will take place “in 6 universes.”

If that were not already enough to communicate the scale of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, they also revealed that 1000 people are working on the sequel, which will see Miles Morales explore the multiverse like never before. Erik Davis of Fandango was also in attendance at the event and informed us that Chris Miller described Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as “way, way bigger than the last one. It’s the largest crew of an animated movie ever.”

As Davis points out, 2018’s Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse featured just 40 characters, which really puts the idea of 240 into perspective, and offers our best idea yet of just how epic things are going to be. Lord and Miller have teased the ambition of the sequel in the past saying, “It is, as Phil said, a very ambitious sequel, because we didn’t want to just sort of do the same thing again. So, the idea that we would be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically, to have each world have its own art style and to be able to push the folks at Imageworks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand. And seeing the development of that stuff is breathtaking.”

The Opening of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Debuted at CinemaCon

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will reunite audiences with Miles Morales. The sequel will see Miles Morales embark on an epic adventure once again, this time being transported into the multiverse itself, where he will join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People who must face a powerful villain. The opening minutes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were shown at CinemaCon 2022, and begin in Earth-65 with Gwen Stacy. The sequence quickly introduces several Spider-Variants, including Spider-Man 2099 and Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman, before throwing Gwen and Miles back into the madness of the multiverse.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara AKA Spider-Man 2099, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman.

Sadly, despite all this teasing, audiences will have to wait a bit longer before heading across the Spider-Verse, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse having recently been delayed. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been pushed back from the end of this year, and is now scheduled to be released in the United States on June 2, 2023. A third outing, which has now officially been titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to be released in March 2024.
