Superbad 2 Idea Revealed by Producer Judd Apatow

Well-renowned comedy director and Superbad producer Judd Apatow has revealed plans for a proposed sequel. A sequel that sadly was ultimately scrapped. Speaking on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Apatow revealed that Superbad 2 would have followed Michael Cera’s Evan to college, with the foul-mouthed, lovable slacker, Jonah Hill’s Seth, suddenly showing up and no doubt bringing all manner of chaos to Evan’s new life.

“I always wanted them to do a sequel to Superbad. I know that Jonah said ‘Oh it’ll be funny to do it when we’re 70 or 80,’ but I really wanted them to do a Superbad in college where Jonah flunks out of college and just shows up and visits Michael Cera at college. But everyone was like ‘Nah we don’t want to screw up Superbad by accidentally making a crappy second one’ and I would always say the same thing, ‘Well that’s like saying don’t make the second episode of the of The Sopranos. Like, so why do you think we would screw up the second one?'”

Directed by Greg Mottola and produced by Judd Apatow, Superbad stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as Seth and Evan, two teenagers about to graduate high school. Before graduating, the boys want to go out on a high, with the endearing pair hoping to party and lose their virginity. But, of course, their plan proves harder than expected. Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the script began development when they were 13 years old and is loosely based on their own experiences.

The movie was both a critical and financial success, grossing $169 million on a $20 million budget, and has gone to be considered one of the best comedies of the modern era. Ever since, comedy fans have wondered whether the Superbad pair would ever be brought back for more, and it certainly sounds like Apatow had a good idea for a sequel. While following them to college seems like an obvious choice, sometimes the obvious idea is genuinely just the best, and the setting would have given Seth and Evan ample opportunity to continue their teenage shenanigans.

Jonah Hill Has Suggested Bringing Superbad Back…But Not for a While

While revealing his suggestion for a Superbad sequel, Judd Apatow makes mention of Jonah Hill’s idea that Seth and Evan should return as old age pensioners. The actor did indeed say this earlier this year, with the actor thinking it best to leave the sequel until the duo are running around an old-folks home. “What I want to do is when we’re like 80, do a ‘Superbad 2,’” Hill said. “Like, ‘old-folks-home Superbad.’ Our spouses die, and we’re single again. That’s what I want ‘Superbad 2’ to be, and that’s the only way I would ever make it.”

Michael Cera has also since said he would be on board, but is concerned about stomping on the legacy of the first movie. “I mean, I would be open to just doing anything with that group of people,” Cera said. “I think that everybody is pretty staunchly against this, just because we feel good about the movie. It could only tarnish something that is a good memory.”

Should Apatow’s idea for Superbad 2 be resurrected, or is it better to leave the franchise alone?
