Taika Waititi Reveals if Thor: Love and Thunder is a ‘Passing of the Torch’

Jane Foster may be obtaining the powers of Thor, but that doesn’t mean Chris Hemsworth’s days in the MCU are numbered.

It’s been nearly a decade since Jane Foster has been part of the MCU, but she’s returning with a bang, or rather a bolt of lightning, this summer. In Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane will possess the God of Thunder’s power by wielding Mjolnir, standing side-by-side with Thor throughout the film. Even though Jane has the hammer, director Taika Waititi recently told Total Film that she isn’t necessarily taking up the mantle of Thor full-time:

“It’s really fun, the idea that Thor has got Stormbreaker, the big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else. It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’…I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case.”

Thor is one of the founding fathers of the MCU by virtue of being a Phase One original. 2011’s Thor was the fourth MCU film to be released, and launched the career of star Chris Hemsworth. Of the original six Avengers, Thor is one of only three that are still active in the MCU, and is the first Marvel Studios character of any kind to receive four films in a spotlight franchise. Hemsworth has kept very busy playing Thor for more than a decade, but if Waititi is to be believed, Love and Thunder may not be the end of the road for the son of Odin.

Will Jane Foster Continue as Thor After Love and Thunder?

As far as what the future holds for Jane Foster, the roadmap may already be spelled out in the pages of Marvel Comics. In speaking with Total Film, Waititi revealed that Jane’s character in Love and Thunder is heavily based on the iconic Jason Aaron Mighty Thor run:

“We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane…because that was such an influence on the film. We’re trying to take the best parts of that.”

There are many different storylines that Jane’s version of Thor is part of in the comics, which provides plenty of possibilities for the MCU. Whether it be her involvement in the Secret Wars, or joining the All-New All-Different Avengers lineup with Sam Wilson and Kamala Khan, Jane can be a major player in the MCU for years to come if Kevin Feige so chooses. That is, of course, if Natalie Portman wants to stick around after Love and Thunder. Portman didn’t exit the MCU very cleanly following the much-maligned Thor: The Dark World, and it’s taken her nearly a decade to come back, but it may ultimately end up being a one-off appearance. With Waititi already alluding to Love and Thunder not exactly transferring the Thor mantle to Jane, Thor himself may still be the God of Thunder for the long haul moving forward.
