The Secrets of Dumbledore ticket sales fell by almost 70% from its debut weekend which easily gives the box office win to The Bad Guys.

The weekend box office win goes to Dreamworks’ latest animated feature The Bad Guys. Making its debut in theaters with this weekend, The Bad Guys follows an animated group of criminal animals who present themselves as model citizens after they’re caught. The film claimed the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office by pulling in $24 million, putting it pretty firmly in first place as many filmgoers brought the whole family to see the new film.

Falling into second place with its third weekend in theaters is the video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The speedy sequel collected about $15.2 million in ticket sales, a decline from the previous week by about 48%. This puts the record-setting video game movie at $145.8 million domestically. These profits also further reinforce that it was a good idea for Paramount to move forward with plans for a cinematic universe, plotting another movie sequel for Sonic as well as a separate spinoff series on HBO Max with Idris Elba’s Knuckles.

Meanwhile, the Warner Bros. sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore saw pretty sharp decline in ticket sales from its debut weekend. With its $14 million in earnings, adding to its total of $67 million, the movie has seen a drop in sales from the week before to the tune of 67%. The reviews were a bit lukewarm, which certainly didn’t help the film’s theatrical run. There had also been many fans boycotting the movie for different reasons, some for J.K. Rowling’s involvement and others for the studio’s decision to recast Johnny Depp’s role.

The Northman Comes Up Short

The Northman debuted with $12 million to land at No. 4 while the Nicolas Cage movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent rounds out the top five with its $7.1 million debut. For The Northman, which is at a global haul of $23.5 million, this isn’t great news, as the film’s budget was upwards of $70 million. Its critical reception has been pretty strong with the film garnering mostly positive reviews.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent pulled in lower numbers than The Northman with its own debut, but at $7.1 million, this is actually ahead of what the studio expectations had been. This film won’t have as far to go to make its money back, given its $30 million budget. A truly unique film that held its world premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW), The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent stars Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage, a parody version of himself.
