The Greatest Showman Star Would Love to Return for a Sequel

Academy Award-nominated actress Michelle Williams has said that she would make a sequel to the 2017 musical hit movie The Greatest Showman “in a heartbeat.” Speaking with Variety, Williams, who starred in The Greatest Showman as Charity Hallett-Barnum, the wife of Hugh Jackman’s P. T. Barnum, is holding out hope that the studio will ask them all to return to The Greatest Showman 2.

“I would make another one of those in a heartbeat. I wish they’d make a sequel.”

The Greatest Showman drops audiences in the early 1800s, and follows P.T. Barnum, a man who displays a natural talent for publicity and promotion, selling lottery tickets by age 12. After trying his hands at various jobs, P.T. turns to show business to indulge his limitless imagination, rising from nothing to create the Barnum & Bailey circus. Featuring catchy musical numbers, exotic performers, and daring acrobatic feats, Barnum’s mesmerizing spectacle soon takes the world by storm to become the greatest show on Earth.

While The Greatest Showman received mixed reviews from critics (it achieved just 56% on Rotten Tomatoes), the musical was an absolute smash-hit with audiences. Grossing a total of $434.9 million, against a production budget of $84 million, The Greatest Showman stands as the fifth-highest-grossing live-action musical of all time, with audiences swept off their feet by the majesty and spectacle as well as, of course, the musical numbers. Something that Michelle Williams would love to bring to the silver screen all over again with a sequel.

“That movie brought so much joy to so many people and to make people that happy, man that is a worthwhile thing to spend your time doing. I really love that movie. My daughter Matilda sang those songs. My mom is still listening to that soundtrack. I love making things for kids that are full of joy and positivity.”

Hugh Jackman Has Said That The Greatest Showman 2 Could Happen

Michelle Williams is not the only member of The Greatest Showman cast who would be on board with reprising their role in a follow-up, with lead star Hugh Jackman having teased the possibility of The Greatest Showman 2 back in 2019. “The real answer is ‘could be,’ I’m not sure. I’m being completely honest with you, there is talk of something going around but no one is really sure,” the actor explained, before revealing that the musical sequel is already being looked into. “But I think someone is working on a treatment for something… I know they are, they’re working on a treatment for something.”

Jackman even suggested that The Greatest Showman 2 could move away from P.T. Barnum as the central character and instead focus on someone else saying, “I would like to be a part of it for sure, and I don’t know if it would be centered on my character.” However, the sequel’s future is now somewhat uncertain since the Disney/20th Century Fox merger. Still, wilder things have happened.

Directed by Michael Gracey in his directorial debut and written by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon, The Greatest Showman stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya, with songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
