Thor: Love and Thunder Director Says Fans May Not Get Thor/Jane Romance They Want

Natalie Portman reprises her role as Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder, but is there a chance she will rekindle her romance with Thor?

When it comes to MCU romances, few seem destined to have a happy ending. One that has been quite rocky has been that of Thor and Jane Foster, from their seemingly destined meeting to a parting of ways that was never really explained and was brushed aside in the psychedelic glory of Thor: Ragnarok before the chaos of Avengers, Infinity War and Endgame took over everything. With Jane now set to meet up again with Thor in his latest movie, could this be a chance for the pair to revisit their missed opportunities for love? According to director Taiki Waititi, fans may not get the happy ending they want.

We are now two months away from the arrival of Thor: Love and Thunder’s theatrical debut, and while Marvel is now shifting their attention from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to their next Disney+ show Ms. Marvel, that doesn’t mean they are about to go steading on marketing for Thor’s fourth solo movie – an MCU first for any of its big heroes. That means we will soon – hopefully – be getting the first full-length trailer for the film after the all-too-short teaser that finally arrived last month.

In the meantime, returning Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has been speaking to Empire for their new issue, and called the movie a love story of sorts. However, when it comes to the romance between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the soon-to-be-transformed Jane Foster, played again by Natalie Portman, he has some potentially disappointing news for fans hoping for a happy ever after. He said:

“I wanted to embrace this thing that I was always a bit dismissive of, and explore this idea of love, and show characters who do believe in love. On paper, it feels kinds of cringy to me, but there’s a way of doing it with cool characters making a cool movie, and also having a thing that no fan ever wants in a superhero movie, which is people talking about love, and characters kissing. I think most people will assume that the love story is between Chris and Natalie. I can’t promise that what people think is going to happen in this film will happen.”

Thor: Love And Thunder Didn’t Reveal Much in its First Trailer

Marvel Studios trailers are a breed of their own. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness managed to put out several trailers that all failed to exactly show where the movie ended up going, and the first teaser for Thor: Love and Thunder has done exactly the same thing. From that first 90 seconds of footage, you would be mistaken for thinking the movie is going to be a gentle little movie about a hero who just wants to float on down the river in peace and harmony. However, we know that is the one thing that will not be happening.

Although we have been given the smallest glimpses of Russell Crowe as Zeus and Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor, we have still to see the villain of the movie, Gorr the God Butcher. Played by Christian Bale in his Marvel debut, it is unlikely that butcher of gods is going to make this a jolly little movie, and he has clearly been kept out of the first trailer to be introduced with the second.
