Thor: Love and Thunder Director Calls the Marvel Sequel ‘Fantastic’ & ‘Cooler’ Than He Expected

Marvel director Taika Waititi has been talking up his upcoming comic book movie sequel Thor: Love and Thunder as if it took on a life of its own, with the filmmaker describing the MCU movie as “fantastic” and “cooler” than the movie he originally set out to make. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Waititi explained how he approaches filmmaking, with the director never tethering his ideas and instead allowing the project to grow and evolve on their own, sometimes with surprising results.

“It’s a fantastic film. I don’t try to control my films, or how they turn out. I sort of let them appear to me. And with this film, I’m like, ‘Hey, you’re kind of cooler than the thing I was originally hoping to make.’ Tonally it’s where I’ve always wanted it.”

It certainly sounds like Taika Waititi has a philosophically hands-off approach to the movies he makes. Rather than stringently structuring and organizing the Marvel outing, Waititi instead has let Thor: Love and Thunder become what it was always meant to be. And it sounds like the method has worked wonders, with the final product impressing even Waititi himself.

Directed by Taika Waititi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods.

To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Taika Waititi Has Called Christian Bale’s Marvel Villain the Best the Franchise Has Ever Seen

Aside from calling Thor: Love and Thunder “fantastic” and “cooler” than he expected, Taika Waititi has further hyped the sequel by heaping praise on the villainous debut of Academy Award winner Christian Bale. “It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie and The Mighty Thor,” Waititi said recently. “And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”

Bale will enter the Marvel fray as Gorr the God Butcher, an alien who has a vengeful vendetta against the gods. Cutting a bloody path through both time and space, Gorr and Thor will no doubt clash in Thor: Love and Thunder in an epic battle as the Asgardian superhero attempts to bring Gorr’s violent mission to an end.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Jeff Goldblum, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
