Tom Hiddleston Explains the Importance of Confirming Loki’s Bisexuality

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is one of the most popular characters to have appeared in the MCU since its inception. As the villain for many years, the charming God of Mischief was a hard character to really dislike, even when he was attempting to destroy the world. However, following his redemption in his final appearances, Loki almost became a hero before dying at hands of Thanos. Despite that, the time-traveling plot of Avengers: Endgame meant that Loki had a second chance in his own Disney+ TV series, and among the many things to come from the popular show was a confirmation of Loki’s sexuality.

The idea of Loki being bisexual was hinted at throughout his time in the main MCU movie timeline, but it was only in the third episode of the Disney+ show that this was confirmed in a conversation during which Loki commented that he had been in romantic liaisons with “princes and princesses”. In an interview with The Guardian, Hiddleston explained that there was a lot of meaning to many people in that confirmation. He said:

“I was just really honored to be asked. “We all wanted to retain the integrity of the character — I wanted to make sure we didn’t lose the bits that people loved, while doing something new. I also hope Loki coming out as bisexual was meaningful to people who spotted it. It was a small step, and there’s further to go. But it was definitely important to all of us.”

While director Kate Herron isn’t returning for the second season of Loki, she previously explained that acknowledging Loki’s bisexuality was a big part of what she wanted to achieve during her time on the series. She explained, “From the moment I joined [Loki] it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual. It is a part of who he is and who I am too. I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in [the MCU].”

Loki Is The Only Live Action Disney+ MCU Series To Get A Second Season

While there is still a good chance that Moon Knight will be back for a second season at some point in the future, Loki is still the only live-action Marvel Studios series on Disney+ to be given the green light for season 2 before the first one ended. While many of the Marvel projects to have hit Disney+ are limited series, focusing on telling a contained story about characters that could not be incorporated into any of the movies, Loki ended in a very open way and clearly invited more of the tale to be told.

Loki also saw the first fraying of the MCU sacred timeline, and the introduction of the multiverse, which was brought into play more recently in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Like everything Marvel Studios does, the story of the multiverse is a marathon and not a sprint, so while little pieces of other realities are now coming through bit by bit, it will be a while before the full impact is revealed.

With Loki season 2 expected to start filming this summer, we can expect more answered sometime next year, when Loki’s storyline could link to Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania thanks to their shared inclusion of Kang the Conqueror.
