Tom Cruise continues to break records with his hotly anticipated action blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. The film is a direct sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic Top Gun and features Cruise and Val Kilmer reprising their iconic roles as naval aviators Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Top Gun: Maverick marks Tom Cruise’s return to the big screen after a four-year-long hiatus, but judging by the film’s performance, it appears fans have been waiting for an eternity to see the charismatic actor perform death-defying stunts again.

Top Gun: Maverick is receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, on par with some of the best films of the past few years, and it is a massive hit with the audience as well. Top Gun: Maverick has received an A+ rating from CinemaScore, joining the likes of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The A+ rating is quite rare nowadays, and even the hugely hyped Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Batman polled B+ and A-scores, respectively. On top of that, Top Gun: Maverick is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 97% critics rating and a near-perfect 99% audience score.

Tom Cruise’s previous best on the controversial site was 2018’s Mission Impossible – Fallout, sitting at a 97% fresh critics score. However, Top Gun: Maverick could best the film with its audience score. M: I – 6 is also Cruise’s highest-grossing movie, and if Top Gun: Maverick continues on its current trajectory, it could snatch that record as well, at least at the domestic box office it would.

Top Gun: Maverick Is On Track To Register Tom Cruise’s Career Best Box Office Opening

While Top Gun: Maverick has already flown past several of Tom Cruise’s personal best records, it is also on track to register the highest Memorial Day box office gross with a $150 million domestic cume. Previous projections had it pegged at making $180 million worldwide in the first four days.

And it’s all thanks to Paramount Pictures’ impressive marketing campaign and positive word of mouth. Industry experts expected a moderate performance from Top Gun: Maverick due to the 36-year gap between the previous movie, which is one of the longest ever, and repeated delays and reshoots, which many take as a sign of behind-the-scenes trouble nowadays.

But as it turns out, Paramount Pictures has been sitting on the film for two years for good reason. Top Gun: Maverick is a spectacle of gigantic proportions and deserves to be witnessed on the biggest, grandest screen possible. Filled with fan service but without compromising on storytelling, relatable new characters, and literally breath-taking action sequences, Top Gun: Maverick is a cinematic treat. The film’s performance also points towards signs that normalcy is returning to the box office and is a positive sign for the future of non-superhero action movies as well.

Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Eric Warren Singer, Ehren Kruger, and Christopher McQuarrie. Alongside Tom Cruise in the lead, the film also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, and Charles Parnell.

Top Gun: Maverick is playing in theaters worldwide right now. Be sure to check it out.
