True Lies Reboot Officially Gets Ordered to Series at CBS

A TV series based on the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie True Lies is moving ahead at CBS as the network ordered a series on the back of a pilot given the go-ahead early last year. After a lengthy delay, the pilot was originally planned to fall into last year’s potential new shows but then slid back to this year. Starring Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga in the roles played by Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis respectively in the movie, the show will reboot the story and rework the original plot.

In the 1994 film, Arnold Schwarzenegger played a man who seemed to be a regular husband, but behind the office worker façade, he is secretly an international spy. Over the course of the movie, his life of intrigue and danger spills into his family life as his wife, looking for some excitement, gets involved in his latest case. From the synopsis, it looks like the series will pick up more or less where the movie ended. It reads:

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

“An unfulfilled suburban housewife (Ginger Gonzaga) is shocked to discover that her bland and unremarkable computer consultant husband (Steve Howey) is a skilled international spy. She is propelled into a life of danger and adventure when she’s recruited to work alongside him to save the world as they try to revitalize their passionless marriage.”

Character Descriptions Have Given More Details On The True Lies Series

As well as the updated synopsis, there were also more detailed descriptions revealed about the two lead characters. First up is Ginger Gonzaga’s Helen, who is “Harry’s supportive wife, mother of two teenage kids and a linguistics professor who is getting annoyed by Harry’s constant business trips away from home. Increasingly angered, she feels as if she’s been robbed of the life she once envisioned for herself. Thrilled when Harry invites her along for a trip to Paris, Helen is in for a rude shock when she sees a very different side to her husband, learning that he is in fact a world-class spy.”

In addition to this, the character information on Harry says that he is “a benign, play-it-safe, seemingly risk-averse computer salesman and devoted family man, married with two kids. But in reality, Harry is an undercover operative, a first-class spy working for a covert U.S. Intelligence organization.”

True Lies is a movie that was always set up to have a sequel, and at one time it looked like that would possibly follow. However, as the years moved on, so did the actors, and it seemed that True Lies was destined to be a stand-alone movie that never quite made it as a franchise. While the new series is a reboot rather than a direct continuation, there is enough of a connection to the original movie to make sure that new and old fans will probably find something to like about the show.

True Lies is one of the new series heading to CBS, along with Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd, which were all ordered yesterday. While these new shows will be welcome additions to the network, fans of the rebooted Magnum P.I. and United States of AI were left disappointed at the news both fan-favorites were among those being canceled.
