Nicolas Cage is obviously the best person to play the parody version of himself in the new film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, but after the filmmakers teased a potential portrayal by chameleon actor Christian Bale, it’s hard not to think about what could have been. In the movie, directed by Tom Gormican and written by Kevin Etten, Cage plays Nick Cage, a heightened version of himself with the same filmography. The story follows Cage as he channels his various action movie roles to rescue his family from a deranged superfan.

In a new interview with Collider, the filmmakers opened up about what they might have done with the movie if they couldn’t have gotten Cage himself on board. They make it clear that the film just wouldn’t have had the same effect with any other actor playing Cage, though Etten admits that he had considered other actors before Cage signed on as he was so proud of the screenplay he’d written. As Etten explains:

PeraMovies News VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I think there were moments when once we had written it and we were trying to get the project going, there were times when I think, personally, selfishly because I wanted to make money and sell this script somewhere, we’d go, ‘Um, maybe this actor or that actor.’ But end of the day, no. Nobody else could have done it.”

Fortunately for the production, Cage did agree to play Nick Cage in the film, and the filmmakers never needed to actually approach any other actors about the possibility. Be that as it may, the two were asked to name which actors they might have gone with if Cage wound up turning down the role. Gormican recalled how Cage himself thought the late Gene Wilder would have been a good actor to play him.

“Nic has said, ‘I think if Gene Wilder were alive he would have been a great idea to play me.’ I don’t know who could do Nicolas Cage.”

Etten then chimed in that Christian Bale would have been who he’d potentially pick. Gormican concurs, imagining Bale or fellow chameleon Daniel Day-Lewis playing Nick Cage in the film, but it would have to be in “full prosthetics.” But we can’t imagine that would be an issue for either actor. As Gormican says:

“Christian Bale or Daniel Day-Lewis in full prosthetics probably.”

Nicolas Cage and Nick Cage Are Not the Same Person

While Nick Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent shares his filmography with real-life actor Nicolas Cage, there are some pretty big differences between the two. In the film, Nick Cage prioritizes his acting career above all else, even his own family at times. Nicolas Cage recently said how this is the exact opposite of how he is in reality, arguing that he previously turned down both The Matrix and Lord of the Rings because it would have taken too much time away from his young son at that time.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent hits theaters on April 22, 2022.
