Zack Snyder’s Oscar Wins May Have Been Rigged by Bots

According to a new report by The Wrap, Zack Snyder’s two Oscar wins for Best Cheer Moment and Fan Favorite Film might have been rigged by Snyder fans. At this year’s Oscars, two separate categories, Best Fan Favorite Film and Oscar’s Cheer Moment, were included in the ceremony. These weren’t official categories but were actually voted on by fans through an online campaign. Beating the likes of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was Zack Snyder who made it big, as his films won in both categories.

While his Army of the Dead took the lead for the Fan-Favorite film, the sequence of “Flash Reversing Time” from Zack Snyder’s Justice League became the Cheer Moment. It was a big win for Zack Snyder, who made a name for himself in the media last year for his continuous advocacy against Warner Bros. to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League. It was the first time his name and his work was recognized at the Oscars and the news came as a delight for his fans. However, now, Snyder’s wins at the Oscars are in question.

According to The Wrap, the polls that voted these two films best in their respective categories could have been manipulated. The reports also state that most of the active contributors to the vote were actually autonomous web programs that cast fake votes in thousands. This analysis comes from reports generated by Tweetbinder, a hashtag analytics tool. Professor David Kirsch of University of Maryland has also stated that all Snyder voter accounts may not belong to human users.

The report has cast a shadow on the credibility of not just the categories but the idea of allowing fan voting in an awards ceremony, let alone at Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences currently stands on the earlier vote results and has not made any official statement about the report. Telescope, the firm that ran the polls and counted them, has also not responded to any requests for comments.

The Reports Further Highlights Snyder Fans’ Obsessive Approach

Even during the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, a certain section of Snyder fans went to lengths of boycotting other Warner Bros. releases. While the fans’ advocacy for Snyder Cut was valid given the amount of changes Snyder’s original version underwent before the film’s release, but some fans took to online hostility to show their support.

If the reports claiming Snyder’s Oscar wins to be fake are true, it once more highlights how Snyder fans have gone a step beyond ethics to support his work which the director himself will be against.

The reports have also brought to light the early dilemmas from fans who were mostly certain for Spider-Man: No Way Home to win in a fan-voted category. No Way Home was not only the biggest commercial success of the year but was praised far more than Army of the Dead, which opened to mixed reviews.

At the 94th Academy Awards, the organizers made several changes to the ceremony. Several categories were removed from live broadcast and new fan-voted categories were included to involve audiences in the process and attract viewership for the show. Several journalists and film critics saw the two fan-voted categories as fillers to acknowledge the representation of films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and other mainstream films. The Will Smith-Chris Rock altercation further added to controversies surrounding the ceremony.

The ceremony itself made history as Jane Campion won for Best Director, Ariana DeBose won for Best Supporting Actress, and a historic Best Picture win by CODA. Unfortunately, it was Will Smith’s slap that gained higher traction in the media instead of celebrating winners.

For now, Academy’s response to the reports is awaited, and until then, Zack Snyder’s films remain victors in their respective categories.
